Commitment? Huh? You mean I actually have to do what I said I was going to do?

In keeping with the theme of Excellence and Integrity, I asked my students today to define the word commitment. Once again they were great at using words and coming up with a pretty accurate definition. They gave examples of different kinds of commitments like marriage, being on a team, even individual goals. Unfortunately, they don't have much of an idea of what it is like to actually follow through with your commitments.

I hope that they learn how to make commitments and keep them. I hope that they make choices about what they really want in life and focus on attaining those goals. I have great hope that they will grow into people that can accurately prioritize their commitments. For now, I will hope that they make it through their years in school alive, well, and with a knowledge about how to honor their commitments.

Do you mean that I actually have to get out of bed and run everyday? Its not good enough that I just made a commitment to do it???

What do you mean the kids in junior high have a problem learning commitment? In junior high comes a lot of commitment activities...
1) gotta kiss my boy today before school.

2) gotta find my homework before 4th period...uh - think I let Schmitho borrow it so she could "learn how to do it" (read COPY)

3) gotta kiss my boy today between 1-2 period.

4) gotta write friend a letter during history class....no - texting is faster ... history teacher won't notice that I'm staring under my desk with glossy eyes and rapid finger movement.

5) gotta kiss my boy today between 2-3 period.

ETC....
Junior High kids are soo wrapped up in their SELFS and their little world - that they don't care about commitment. (read RESPONSIBILITY or DEDICATION or EFFORT - all apply)

But they are COMMITTED to their boy in junior high.

GRR...Jr High parents need to help us teach the kids commitment, responsibility, dedication, effort, etc.
